The need for digital access is more vital than before. Online learning will continue to play a prominent role at universities – and we’re concerned that the digital divide may be one obstacle too many for ‘missing middle’ students.
Andrew Craig, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics at University of Johannesburg wrote a blog post to share his experiences of lecturing during lockdown with us.
It’s amazing what we can do when we work together!
The switch to online learning has put immense strain on our ‘missing middle’ students. But thanks to the Feenix community 373 final year and postgraduate students have already received laptops, food or data vouchers through our #CapTheGap campaign which is now heading into the last of its three month campaign.
As the #CapTheGap relief fund reaches the halfway mark, we wanted to thank everyone that has come forward to help us in bridging the digital divide to raise R3,328,330.50. We also want to take the opportunity to speak to Political Science student, Akhona about how her education journey has been affected because of the lockdown.
For Mandela Day on 18 July, his birthday, we heed the global call for humanitarian action in celebration of Nelson Mandela’s life and legacy by continuing to work towards access to education for all. We urge you to join in, #CapTheGap and make an urgent donation to tertiary students in South Africa whose education has been derailed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
